Coal handling plant upgraded drag conveyor bends and wear strips to UHMWPE — 4× service life.
A coal handling plant runs en-masse drag conveyors moving crushed coal from primary to secondary storage. The conveyors include several 90° bends and a long flat run, with chain wear strips throughout.
Steel bend rails and steel wear strips. Replacement interval: ~6 months for bend rails, ~12 months for wear strips. Significant noise (~95 dB at the bend during operation).
Bend rail service life ~24 months (4× steel). Wear strip life ~36 months (3× steel). Noise at bend dropped to ~83 dB (12 dB reduction = subjectively "much quieter"). No chain damage from UHMWPE wear (original concern was chain galling against plastic — not observed).
